El Refugio de Juanar lets visitors enjoy nature

FLORA AND FAUNA

The natural botanical and zoological riches of the Juanar plains and its villages are obvious and evident. The vegetation is abundant, in some measure repopulated, diverse types pine groups predominate, and of which are noteworthy the insigne pine, Corsican pine, Corsican laricio and Aleppo pine. There are also a great many beautiful chestnut trees, cherry trees, olive trees and kermes oaks, as well as eucalyptus which quickly colonise the terraced area near the lodge. In the area grow various pinesaps and common bracken, protected by the umbra and the fresh wooded areas. There are a number of junipers, mastics, gorse, aromatic plants, esparto grass, diverse types of orchids, lichen and maidenhair in the humid hollows of the rocks. In respect to the fauna there are a number of mountain goats, part of the natural reserve, golden eagles, short toed eagles and nocturnal predators as well as eagle owls, little owls, tawny owls and common barn owls, as well as other animals such as foragers, genet cats, martens, foxes, mountain cats, ichneumons, common hedgehogs and reptiles horseshoe whipsnakes, montpelliers, lataste vipers, spiny footed and ocellated lizards.

GEOLOGY

In the Juanar plains lands can be seen made up of metaphoric white and greyish marbles, gneiss, quartzite’s and other types of metaphoric rocks. The whole areas is rich in minerals, having found old mines and white talc of great purity, titanium minerals (ilmenite and titanite), iron (magnetite and haematites authors of the olive pigmentation) aluminium and magnesium (spinels of different tones, gem quality, pink, black, greens and blues) and a number of minerals due to their crystallisation and beauty unique in Europe, some of these identified for the first time thanks to polarisation microscope studies carried out by the engineer from Malaga Orueta and the geologist from the province of Cadiz Macpherson at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

How to get here

By car: 

From Finca Mil Estrellas (Alhaurin el Grande):

From the roundabout with the BP Gas station, near Finca Mil Estrellas, follow the road toward Coin & Marbella. After 5 kms, you will see signs towards Monda & Marbella on your left. Take the turn left and follow the road towards Marbella. After your have passed the village of Monda, with the Monda Castle clearly visible from the road, its only another 5 mins to the exit “El Refugio de Juanar”. Once you have reached the Exit “El refugio de Juanar” (on your right side), follow the road up the mountain till you reach the Hotel. Keep the Hotel on your right hand side and continue the road up the mountain, till you cant continue anymore. Park here and walk up the path, following the various Hiking trails up the mountain.
